— Endowed by the family and friends of world renowned color consultant Faber Birren, the annual high-profile Faber Birren Color Award Show at the Stamford Art Association Gallery will open Sunday, October 3, to celebrate creative expressions of color.
“Color is simply the greatest show on earth,” Birren once said. Stamford’s annual Color Show has grown from a regional exhibit to one that is now international in scope, encouraging artists in all media. The competition is the only artistic event in the country devoted exclusively to the use of color. Entries for the show will be judged by Samantha Rippner, Associate Curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. More than $3,000 in awards will be announced at the show’s opening reception on October 3, 4-6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The show will run through Thursday, November 4. The Stamford Art Association is located at 39 Franklin Street (off Broad Street). Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday (11 a.m. – 3 p.m.) and weekends (12 p.m. – 3 p.m.). Admission is free. For more information, call 203.325.1139 or visit www.stamfordartassociation.org. A Stamford resident for 50 years, Birren (1900-1988) spent his professional career focused on the artistic impact of color and the human response to it. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Birren went on to distinguish himself as a world-famous color consultant and author of 25 books and some 260 articles on color. Among his clients were Walt Disney Studios, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, the U. S. Coast Guard, DuPont, House and Garden Magazine, and Stamford’s Aid for the Retarded, where he offered expertise on visual, physiological, and psychological reactions to color. His collection of books on color is at the Yale University Library.
