Music For Youth Presents Samuel Suggs, Double Bass

Pequot Library
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Free Music for Youth Free Young Persons’ Concerts Series at Pequot Library kicks off their season with Samuel Suggs, double bass

Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 at 2pm

Pequot Library, Southport, CT

What is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra?  It’s the double bass designed to fill large halls with low frequencies.  Music for Youth will open their 2017 season with the double bass virtuoso Samuel Suggs, who was recently named the 2016 Concert Artist Guild’s New Music Fellow.  Suggs will play a unique solo concert highlighting the range and scope of the double bass.  Many of the selections will feature his original arrangements and compositions.

Before the concert there will be a pre-concert “meet the double bass” workshop at 1:15 for young children and families.  Two High School students will demonstrate the range of sounds on the double bass and talk about the history of the instrument.  Please register for this free 30 minute program To register email: childrens@pequotlibrary.org.  Samuel Suggs was named Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places Fellow at the 2016 CAG International Competition, making him first double bassist in thirty-six years to join the CAG roster.

Take this musical journey with Suggs who will reveal the musical genius of Purcell, Bach, Walter and his own solo compositions.  Sugg’s concert will be followed by a master class for advanced double bass students.  Registration is required for participation; and interested students should email musicforyouthct@gmail.com for more information.  There is a suggested donation of $35 for performing in the master class.

The concert in September is FREE for adults attending with children. Adults attending without children are asked to make a goodwill donation to help sustain future programs.  Doors will open at 1:45 pm.  Please visit our website at musicforyouth.net, email us at musicforyouthct@gmail or call 203-254-0123  for more information and to learn about future concerts.
