Kathy Maher: Museums Of The Future - The Case Of The Barnum

WPKN, 89.5 FM
8/13/18
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
https://www.wpkn.org/shows/cacf/

This program will explore what the successful museums of the future are going to look look like. What are the transformations in the arts and culture, tourism and the entertainment sector, family structure and entertainment budgets that may affect what museums will look like and what their goals might be?

The Barnum Museum will be our starting point in this conversation with its executive director, Kathy Maher. An historian and preservationist, who sits on the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Council, and the Board of the State Library and Museum of Connecticut History and Heritage, Kathy is a sought after speaker on historic preservation, urban revitalization and economic development through community arts and cultural heritage.

Even before the storms that ravaged large sections of the Barnum Museum, Kathy Maher was working on envisioning how The Barnum would develop its appeal to a national audience, as well as continuing to evolve in its complex role in Bridgeport's cultural, economic future.

With the significant damage inflicted by the 2010 EF1 tornado and by hurricanes Irene and Sandy, the impetus to reimagine the museum was given added urgency. Under Maher's leadership, the Museum is focusing on new and innovative methods, integrating history, arts, science and technology to create a dynamic 21st century Museum for the future.

With new partners in the convention, entertainment and tourism business, the Barnum is joining museums across the board that are re-aligning themselves with the "edutainment" interests of all generations. Hear both about the Barnum's progress and the exciting developments across the country that Kathy Maher is part of.
