Open MINDS Institute Four Great Masters / Four Great Centuries

Quick Center For The Arts
9/5/17 - 10/10/17

quickcenter.fairfield.edu/17-18-season/open-minds-institute/open-minds-inst-fiona-garland.html

The first in a series of five classes by art historian Fiona Garland on each of four great masters of the visual arts starts on Tues. Sept 5. The first class focuses on Giotto. The final class will meet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC for an on-site analysis and appreciation of examples of their great works.

Giotto, van Eyck, Leonardo, and Velazquez are giant names in the history of western art. Their paintings demonstrate the very essence of artistic genius offering inspiration and beauty across the generations. From Florence to Flanders and from Milan to Madrid they defined their centuries’ artistic output while responding to the cultural contexts of their time. Each lecture will bring to life one of these artists in a dynamic presentation, also exploring both their influence and influences. Students are encouraged to offer their own responses and reflections after each lecture. The final class will meet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC for an on-site analysis and appreciation of examples of their great works. By the end of the course you will have a deeper understanding of how these painters came to address the high points of their cultural setting.

FIONA GARLAND earned her MA in Art History from the Courtauld Institute in London, specializing in Venetian art. Teaching in a lively and engaging style, she has guided tours of art museums and churches across Europe and North America. Ms. Garland is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Fairfield University Art Museum.
